Foreign governments occasionally demand evidence that the official signatures on Australian papers are legitimate before they will accept them. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) must compare a signature, stamp, or seal on an official Australian public document to a specimen that is on file before determining whether it is authentic.
