The Australians only need things to go their way – win the toss and bat first and getting a fair shake when it comes to umpiring decisions. Australia have been badly effected by poor umpiring with at least six decisions going against them at critical times – decisions which later proved to be wrong. If the Aussies can accumulate 450 plus in the first innings, look out because they can really bowl to that sort of total.

Australia’s betting odds to win the series are probably reasonable. They would need to win these last two tests to win the series and that is a hard task. However, the 9/4 on offer for a drawn series looks mighty attractive to me. For Australia, they would be happy to square the series since it means they retain the Ashes. Can England win one of these last two tests? It all depends on Flintoff. If he can fire like he did at Lords – then yes we can. If he doesn’t fire then I have my doubts. At 6/5, I am not risking my money on that possibility.

The Australian side in 2005 were seasoned campaigners who, for some reason, fell apart when under pressure. This years team is full of novices. There isn’t the expectation to turn up and score 500 as was the case in 2005. They know they have to work for every run and for every wicket.

There is a touch of the sameness about the English team, however. One go to bowler and one or two batsmen firing. The problem is, out go to bowler is under threat of breaking down anytime and as we saw in the third test, when he isn’t firing, we struggle to get Australian wickets.
