News Synopsis

In response to growing concerns that children are using fake dates of birth to create profiles on social media sites, Meta-owned Instagram has introduced its new test for users to verify their age with an authentic ID or video selfie in India.

In India, if someone tries to change their date of birth from under the age of 18 to 18, or over, the company will now demand that they upload their ID or take a video selfie to verify their age.

“We're testing this so we can make sure teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. Testing began in June this year in the US, and now it's expanding to India and Brazil, “The company stated.

Before the end of the year, the company intends to extend the test to the EU and the UK. Instagram continued, “We're also removing Social Vouching as an option to verify age from the test to make some improvements,”

Users might request age confirmation from each other's followers by using the Social Vouching feature. They requested the three people they chose to vouch for them to confirm their age, and they were given three days to reply.

Now, test takers have the option to upload a video selfie in order to verify their age.

“If you choose this option, you'll see instructions on your screen to guide you. After you take a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else. Yoti's technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us,”  Instagram stated.
