The telecom industry has been a part of the cutting-edge innovations and liberalisation since the early 2000s. The Telecom industries communicate through words, voice, audio or video. Their products are divided into three sub-sectors namely telecom equipment, wireless communication and Telecom services.

In order to contribute and retain the success of the Telecom Industry, the government established a new department which is called the Telecommunication Engineering Centre or the TEC. TEC is responsible to grant TEC Certificates to the products used in Telecom Industry in compliance with the standard rules and regulations. In this blog, we will go through the various approvals authorised by TEC Certification.

Types of Voluntary Testing Certifications:

TEC issues various approvals like Type Approvals, Interface Approvals, Certificate of Approvals and Service Approvals. However, these certifications depend on the products and their interface. Nevertheless, we will describe about each of these approvals in brief:

  1. Type Approval

Type Approval authorised by TEC Certification is the procedure of testing and certifying a telecom product to make sure it meets TEC's requirements. This involves following a specific test schedule and procedure. The testing can be done either at the manufacturer's location or in a laboratory. Additionally, reports from accredited labs that test for things like EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), safety, and environmental factors are also considered valid.

  1. Interface Approval

The process of evaluating and certifying a telecom product to make sure it complies with TEC standards is known as interface approval. It follows a particular test schedule and procedure known as Test Schedule & Test Procedure (TSTP). The testing can happen in a lab or at the manufacturing facility. Reports from accredited labs that evaluate elements like EMC, safety, and environmental concerns are also accepted as reliable. It's vital to remember that Interface Approval may be required as an obligatory certification by licence requirements, governmental organisations, or service providers.

  1. Certificate of Approval

The process of evaluating and certifying the products based on a manufacturer’s standards is referred to as a Certificate of Approval. TEC issues this certificate only when there is no specific generic or Interface requirement for a product. The testing can be conducted either at the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) location or in a laboratory. Reports from accredited labs that assess factors like EMC, safety, and environmental aspects are also accepted. OEM refers to the original equipment manufacturer, which is the company responsible for producing the telecom product.

  1. Technology Approval

Technology approval authorized by TEC Certification refers to evaluation or testing of a prototype of a Telecom product, developed by C-Dot or other research and development organisations. his approval is granted based on the product's relevant standard, which was previously referred to as the Generic Requirement (GR) provided by TEC. The testing can be conducted either at the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) location or in a laboratory. Reports from accredited labs that evaluate factors such as EMC, safety, and environmental aspects are also accepted during this process.

Conclusion

Businesses wishing to engage in the import, production, or trading of telecom equipment in India must first obtain TEC Certification. Furthermore, a TEC Certification number is an individual identifying number associated with every approved telecom product that aids in verifying the product's marketability.
