This Week In Trailers: From the Bridge, Nico, 1988, Holiday, Cold War, Bonding

Green Band Trailer Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we go to Comic-Con and talk fandom with George Takei, we try and escape an abusive relationship with a drug lord while sunning it up on vacation, take a last look at the singer Nico, remember a time long since past filled with frivolity and heartbreak, and connect with old friends in the oddest way imaginable. From the Bridge: A Documentary When it comes to trying to communicate what this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con is supposed to represent, this trailer comes close. While I think there are more nuanced ways of trying to cram so...

If the ‘Magicians’ Comic-Con Panel is Any Indication, Season 4 is Going to Be Crazy and Lots of Fun [Comic-Con 2018]

the magicians comic-con “Can you tell we were drinking tequila in the green room?” showrunner Sera Gamble asked at one point during The Magicians panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The answer to Gamble’s question was yes, but it was a wonderful thing to see Gamble, her fellow executive producer John McNamara and cast members Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman and Summer Bishil enjoying each other’s company and having a rowdy time on stage. Tequila or no tequila, it was clear that they all genuinely liked each other, and the panel was full of jokes and laughter as they took audience questions and tried to avoid spoiling anything from Season 4. Felicia Day joined in the fun as the panel’s moderator, and kicked off the show by introducing a clip that recapped what happened in Season 3. I won’t go into the specifics of the last season here, except to...

‘Disenchantment’ Trailer Brings ‘Futurama’-Style Humor to a Fantasy Setting

disenchantment trailer Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, heads to Netflix with Disenchantment, a very-funny looking new animated series set within a fantasy realm. Groening and his team appear to be creating a series that owes more to Futurama than it does The Simpsons, right down to the voice actors and animation style. Watch the hilarious new Disenchantment trailer below.  Disenchantment Trailer  Well, gosh darn it, this looks like a heck of a lot of fun. Futurama was one of the all-time great animated shows, and the tone and style of Futurama seems to have been transplanted over to Disenchantment. In the series, alcoholic Princess Bean (voiced by Broad City star Abbi Jacobson), sets out on a series of misadventures in her enchanted kingdom of Dreamland. Along the way, Bean is accompanied “by her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci.” This trailer promises more of the irreverent, off-beat, yet surprisingly touching humor that Groening and company perfected on The Simpsons and Futurama. Amidst...

Cut Throat City is a heist movie set during/after Hurricane Katrina in the lower ninth ward in New Orleans, about four boyhood friends who figure out how to land on their feet again after the first job goes bad. The outstanding cast features Shameik Moore, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Denzel Whitaker, Keean Johnson, Wesley Snipes, Terrence Howard, T.I., Eiza Gonzalez, Isaiah Washington, & Kat Graham. This is a very compelling first tease, setting up the stakes and introducing the four boys. I'm looking forward to see more. ››› Continue Reading First Comic-Con Teaser for RZA's New Orleans...
