    1. Beer 348. By next week it could be 349. No, that’s not the number of consecutive Denver Broncos home-game sellouts, it’s the number of breweries we have here in the Centennial State. We take beer seriously here, and certainly don’t have time for any of that fluff from St. Louis. Unless you want to look naïve when making happy hour plans, don’t suggest that bar down the street. You’ll attract much more enthusiasm by recommending the new brewery that opened up next to the King Soopers in that shopping center off the highway on the other side of town. We’ll all jump on our bikes and pedal over there after work. 2. The rest of the “Locavore” movement I’ll take my wine and peaches from Palisade, my corn from Olathe, and my cantaloupes from Rocky Ford. Opening a restaurant in Denver? Do yourself a favor and stock local food, craft......

AT SOMEWHERE AROUND 100 YEARS OLD, Whang-od is the last living Mambabatok (tattoo artist) of her generation in Buscalan, a remote mountain village in the Kalinga province of the Philippines. She is a living connection to ancient tribal culture, a time when tattoos were part of a larger ceremony known as batok, which included chanting and recognition of one’s honor. a living connection to ancient tribal culture… Whang-od first began at age 15, and continues today, with the simple setup of a thorn from a lime tree as the needle and a charcoal-water mix for ink. Thinking back to the earliest times when she gave tattoos to tribal headhunters and indigenous women, she jokes, “You [used to] get a tattoo when you kill because you have become a warrior. Now everyone gets tattoos.” Whang-od has passed on the practice to her grandnieces, Grace Plaice and Ilyang Wigan, who tattoo alongside......

    Snow season on a budget

I’m a dirtbag ski bum. After growing up in ski towns, obtaining a ski industry degree, experiencing winters around the world, and working almost every kind of resort job offered, I have often struggled to survive on a budget. I’ve learned a few tricks along the way, here are some of my sure-fire tips for surviving the snow season on a budget. 1. Get trail advice from restaurant staff. In most slopeside restaurants, some of the best skiers on the mountain are serving your drinks and food. Bring your ski map to lunch and get pointed to the best areas you won’t get shown in the ticket office. Getting off the grid and away from popularized slopes will save you major bucks. 2. Buy your boots, don’t rent them. Rent skis, don’t buy them. Your boots are your most important equipment. Buy them new, get them fitted professionally, and both your......

    Visit Cathedral Beach in Spain

Who said man made the best cathedrals? This coastline proves nature does a fine job of it. While officially it’s called the Praia de Augas Santas or “Beach of the Holy Waters” it’s known to the locals as Praia das Catedrais or “Cathedrals Beach.” The raw power of the Atlantic Ocean and the relentless wind has carved sea caves, caverns, and arches all along this Galician coast in northwest Spain. This stretch between the beaches of Augas Santas and Carracelas is a natural work of fine art whose giant flying buttresses are as exquisite as any cathedral hands have built. Some of the arches are over 90 feet tall, and what seem like small cracks are actually entrances to vaulted sea caves carved out from the rock. There’s just one catch: the sandy processional through these monuments is only accessible when the tide is out. At low tide, you’ll have 1400......

  • Prepare to be taken to dizzying heights as a new documentary explores the physical beauty of the world’s highest places in ‘an exhilarating game of vertical pinball’The world’s high places are having a moment. Not only is there a minor publishing boom in books about our fascination with mountains, there have been some dramatic films too, partly driven by advances in technology that allow us to get intimate with these rugged landscapes in ways we never have before. In the wake of Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest and the documentary Meru, both released in 2015, comes Mountain, an exploration of our modern fascination with the world’s orogenic zones. It is a dizzying experience. Mountain brings together some of the strongest adventure sport cinematography of recent years, ricocheting around the planet, from Nepal to New Zealand and Austria to Antarctica, in an exhilarating game of vertical pinball. Few of these locations are identified. It’s the......
